Preschool Education
The Hospital Education Program (HEP) provides preschool children from
ages 2 through 5 years (kindergarten) with a stimulating and fun
environment designed to encourage growth in major developmental areas.
Preschool services are available to young children hospitalized either
on the 7th floor of University Hospital or at the Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center (KCRC).
Play and learning opportunities in preschool center around weekly
thematic units. Classroom activities include stories, music, art,
science projects, and games as well as medical play , which helps
children explore their fears and anxieties about hospitals and medical
procedures. For children who are unable to leave their hospital rooms,
bedside sessions are arranged. Physical education is offered at
University Hospital for preschool-aged children.
The hospital teacher contacts the home school of the
child who has previously been enrolled in a preschool or kindergarten
program and who has attended the HEP for a minimum of three days. For
the child who is in special education, a copy of the Individualized
Education Program (IEP) is requested from the home school division.
With parent permission the IEP may be modified for use during
hospitalization. After discharge a summary of the child's
participation and progress is shared with the family and the home
school.
With parent permission the HEP may implement the
eligibility process for the child who is suspected of having a
disability.
All HEP services are free to children and their families. For additional information, contact (434) 924-2658.
