In the April 19, 2000 JAMA, Drs. Anne Scheetz and Mary Fry introduced the concept of telling patient narratives in 55 word stories. In similar fashion, the artists of Veritas have used this creative but somewhat restrictive format to tell readers more about themselves. We hope that you enjoy learning about the people who contributed to the Spring 2005 edition of Veritas.

Leah Acosta, SMD07 :: Leah looks forward to the day when her poetry will be less angst-ridden while remaining cathartic. Surfacing at age 9 with an ode to the 1989 San Francisco earthquake, her poetic genius draws inspiration from ordinary epiphanic moments (e.g. visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau in 'Joined Humanity') and working through complex psychological conundra, usually of her own construction.

Daniel A. Barker, SMD08 :: Daniel is an avid lawn darter and linux kernel builder. He enjoys making fine ales and one day hopes to open a brewery, where hippies will grow organic barley, hops and wheat. He will most likely become a doctor when he grows up, however he does not know when that will be.

Stephen Collins, SMD05 :: Virginian at heart. William and Mary educated. Soon to be Yale-trained surgeon. Likes to read and write. Avid skier and outdoors adventurer. Loves anything to do with home projects, landscaping, or spending time with wife. As a fourth year student, can often be found playing racquetball or hanging out at Barnes & Noble.

Elizabeth Gagliardi, SMD05 :: Liz Gagliardi is heading to Charleston, SC for her residency in OB/Gyn. Liz loves to read everything and anything on which she can get her hands. Originally from Massachusetts, Liz likes the water, sailing, running, hiking and the Boston Red Sox. She spends her time in Charlottesville eating, drinking, knitting, dancing, and walking Miss Ellie.

Andrew Koo, SMD05 :: The astute reader will notice that he takes photographs when time and budget permit. He is also perpetually seeking ways to hike back to that big ranch in New Mexico. He enjoys cooking and knows enough about computers to be somewhat dangerous. Oh, and he usually does not talk about himself in the third person.

Julie Moyers, Visiting Medical Student, Class of 2005 :: Former Virginian, attends Loma Linda University in Southern California. She has not yet been involved in any carjackings, riots, plastic surgeries, or gratuitous award ceremonies. Her interests include local seismic activity, finding the perfect avocado for making guacamole, and landscape photography.

Lanre Omojokun, SMD05 :: I'm a big fan of sleeping in, foreign films, snotty-nosed kids, loud music of almost any variety. Future pediatrician with visions of opening a bookstore/coffeeshop/dance club in which I will be the DJ. (Also an avid dreamer without business or DJ experience.) Love to write about people who teach me without realizing it.

Jessicah Phillips, SMD05 :: Fourth year student. Newlywed to Stephen. Dedicated Presbyterian. Amateur chef. Avid tea drinker, my favorite is Twinings English Breakfast. Flower enthusiast. Lover of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville, Williamsburg, and everything Virginia. Soon-to-be internal medicine resident at Yale. Likely, future oncologist. Homeowner and Connecticutian in seven days. And, enthusiastic learner about everything Connecticut.

Jennifer Quay, Visiting Medical Student, Class of 2005 :: Jenni Quay is an Okie who defines herself as a fly-fishing, novel reading, rock climbing, duck hunting, mountaineering, coffee drinking garage sale magnet. She is eager to begin her year as an intern where she will have minimal time to continue these hobbies - other than coffee drinking - but fully expects to be satisfied none-the-less.

Uttama Sharma, SMD05 :: Uttama Sharma is a 4th year medical student who loves to read, write, climb, hike, learn about different cultures and languages, spend time surrounded by trees and mountains, travel to small, unknown places, participate in dangerous adventures, and will try anything once. She hopes to be a good doctor and practice medicine around the world.

Gabriel Spring, SMD08 :: Gabriel Spring was born and raised in various towns in NY until his parents followed the mass exodus to the south. He is interested in breaking barriers of self-expression in everyday life, but finds writing, art, and music three avenues that approach this virtue. Gabe still doesn't know what he wants to be when he grows up.

Samuel Andrew Taylor, Jr., SMD05 :: Christian. Loving husband. Proud father. Virginian. Amateur chef. Player of taiji. Avid photographer. Lover of poetry and linguistics. Soon-to-be neurologist. Be-too-soon intern. Being thankful in stillness and wonderfully Purchased, I am grateful to God for His copious blessings, Grace and Mercy for they are truly everlasting. Peace be to you all.
