Thomas Lynch is an undertaker from Milford, Michigan, who is also a published poet and author. His first book, published by Knopf in 1987, was Skating with Heather Grace . In 1994 he published a collection of essays, The Undertaking: Life Studies , which won the Heartland Prize for nonfiction, the American Book Award and was a finalist for the National Book Award, and which has been translated into several languages. In 1998, he published Still Life in Milford; his last collection of essays, Bodies in Motion and at Rest , came out in 2000 and won the Great Lakes award. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, Poetry, the Paris Review, Harper's, Esquire, Newsweek, the Boston GlobeThe Washington Post, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Irish Times, and The Times of London.
