 Fall 2006 Program Schedule
The Medical Center Hour is the UVA School of Medicine's weekly forum on topics of mutual concern to medicine and society. Produced by the Center for Humanism in Medicine, the Medical Center Hour is held every Wednesday from September through March, from 12:30 to 1:30 pm, in the medical school's Jordan Conference Center Auditorium. The conference is open to the entire University community and to the public.
Established in 1971 by former dean Thomas H. Hunter, M.D., and pioneer ethicist Joseph Fletcher, the Medical Center Hour offers discussion and debate of big-picture medical and social issues and controversies. Programs are usually interdisciplinary and feature a mix of visiting speakers and local experts; some programs feature a single speaker, while others are point/counterpoint debates or performances.
The Medical Center Hour draws a diverse audience of students, faculty and staff from across the University, Health Systems clinicians and community residents. Programs are recorded for local television broadcast and for viewing in the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library. The library's archive of program videotapes dating to the late 1970s and (now) DVDs is a rich resource for students, teachers and scholars.
Physicians, nurses, chaplains and other licensed health care professionals attending the Medical Center Hour may receive continuing education credit.
