With talk of a coming pandemic, how should we approach the prospect of widespread communicable disease with substantial social, political, and economic consequences? This keynote address brings an evolutionary perspective to the study of health and disease, integrating evolutionary explanations for the existence of disease with traditional mechanistic understandings of pathogens and human susceptibilities.
