The Hospital Expansion Project expands and upgrades the facilities most in need at the University of Virginia Health System.  The project involves construction of a new 6-level addition at the rear of University Hospital as well as substantial internal renovations.   The project will provide clinical and associated support space for four critical hospital services: the Heart Center, Perioperative Services, the Department of Radiology, and the Department of Clinical Laboratories.

Designed by the Dallas office of RTKL Associates Inc., new construction accounts for approximately 130,000 sq. ft. over six levels including five occupied floors and an intermediate mechanical floor.  The new addition utilizes space created by a recent project reorienting Lane Road more proximal to the campus boundary along the railroad.  The design of the new addition is an extension of the existing University Hospital, matching the existing materials and details.

The renovations entail approximately 150,000 sq. ft.  The entire existing Level 2 hospital floor plate (approx. 126,000 s.f) will be renovated to accommodate changing programmatic needs.  A new connecting link will be built across the existing two-story hospital cafeteria for more direct access by the patients to the Heart Center Clinics which will be relocated to the Primary Care Center.  Level 1 renovations include the main hospital lobby, the primary radiology waiting room, and a pocket of administrative area adjacent to the lobby for the reception desk and associated functions.  Two new patient/visitor elevators have been provided in the lobby area to access the future re-organized second floor services.

Construction began in January 2003.  The new addition was completed in August 2005.  The renovation  phases of this complex multiphase project are to be complete by end of 2006.  The entire hospital facility will remain operational throughout construction.  The project will be conducted without discontinuity of existing functions and services and has been sequenced and coordinated with Hospital operations.
