Description:

The distinguishing feature of this variant of AML is that the bone marrow is hypoplastic, resembling aplastic anemia. Unlike aplastic anemia in which the cellular elements are mostly plasma cells, lymphocytes, and histiocytes, in hypoplastic acute myeloblastic leukemia they are mostly blasts with a varying number of nucleated red cells. It also is frequently misdiagnosed as aplastic anemia, and must also be distinguished from hypoplastic myelodysplastic syndrome in which the cellular elements show more evidence of maturation with dysplastic granulocytes.
