Description:

The classic sickle cell is sickle or crescent-shaped and often hyperchromic without central palor. Other forms seen are holly leaf- or boat- shaped.

Pathobiology:

Results from polymerization of abnormal hemoglobin.

Differential Diagnosis:

  • Sickle cell (SS) disease
  • Hemoglobin SC disease
  • Hemoglobin SD disease
  • Hemoglobin S-beta thalassemia
