Schistocyte

Description:

Fragmented or fragments of red cells. Schistocytes vary markedly in size and shape.

Pathobiology:

Results from mechanical damage to the red cell membrane, either in the circulation or in the bone marrow. May occur with normal or abnormal red cells.
