Bone marrow aspirate, Wright-Giemsa stain, 1000x
Description:
On a Wright-Giemsa stain by light microscopy, the lineage of blasts seen on a normal bone marrow aspirate cannot be determined. Normal bone marrow blasts are approximately the size of a normal circulating segmented neutrophil, but the size ranges in diameter from 10-18 μm. The nucleus is round to slightly oval and frequently eccentrically located. The nuclear chromatin is fine and evenly dispersed but may be clumped around nucleoli. One to two nucleoli are usually seen, but not always. The nucleoli have a light sky-blue color but may have a pale-creamy appearance. The cytoplasm is scant with a grey to grey-blue color and is without granules.
