Preventive Cardiology

Find a cardiologist

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among men and women in the U.S., accounting for 40% of all deaths.    The good news is that you can reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease, or slow its progression, by making simple lifestyle changes.   Diet, exercise, and other lifestyle choices play a significant role in controlling the risk factors that lead to cardiovascular conditions.

Hypertension

UVa is particularly innovative in managing difficult-to-treat hypertension and welcomes referrals of patients not responding to conventional hypertension treatments or therapy. Our team emphasizes the critical nature of early and preventative treatment, including a full array of testing services to determine the extent of a patient's hypertension. UVa also provides 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring as part of the  hypertension services.

Lipid Management

UVa offers a number of procedures and services that can measure and treat lipid abnormalities before they cause coronary artery disease and also reduce the chance of a cardiac event in a patient with existing CAD.

Services include:

  • Blood Fraction testing and analysis using Vertical Autoprofile (VAP)
  • Brachial Artery Reactivity
  • Carotid Intimal Medial Thickness Study
  • Coronary Calcium CT screening

Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease

People with diabetes often have atherosclerosis, placing them at risk for heart disease and stroke.  The Diabetes Cardiovascular Clinic connects patients with cardiologists and endocrinologists as well as cardiovascular nurses, cardiovascular rehabilitation specialists, dietitians, and certified diabetes educators in one location.  Our multidisciplinary team approach allows us to streamline evaluation and treatment and help patients better understand their condition, including how to reduce their risk of heart disease or stroke.  Our goal is to work with the referring physician in the management of their patients’ medical condition.
