Treatment Team

Your treatment team will meet weekly to discuss our progress, strengths, weaknesses, and evaluate the success of the treatment plan.  Your active involvement is essential to a successful treatment plan.

  • You and your family are the center of the team.
  • Physicians - Our board certified physiatrists (Rehabilitation Specialists) work to provide patients with comprehensive medical care and treatment.
  • Case Management - Coordinates your care to ensure you receive the needed benefits from every available resource. The CM serves as the liaison between the patient, family, insurance carrier, community agencies, and the rehabilitation team.
  • Nursing - Rehabilitation nurses help the patients utilize skills learned in therapy and encourage daily self-care goals. Rehabilitation nurses specialize in teaching patients and families how to manage healthcare needs after leaving the hospital. These nurses will encourage patients to become as independent as possible and teach family members how to help patients become motivated and more independent.
  • Nursing Rehab Tech - These personnel are specifically trained to treat rehabilitation patients with the best possible techniques.
  • Physical Therapy - focuses on developing your functional mobility. Physical Therapists teach patients mobility skills, walking, transfers, and provide adaptive equipment evaluation and training.
  • Occupational Therapy - enables people to maximize their abilities to perform day to day activities (bathing, dressing, meal preparation). Community re-entry outings are planned as stepping stones to life after discharge.
  • Speech Language Pathology - improves communication skills which include swallowing, speaking, memory, reading, writing, and comprehension.
  • Respiratory Therapy - assists patients with respiratory muscle weakness or anyone with breathing difficulties. Therapists help strengthen muscles, clear congestion, improve and aid in ventilation and help prevent further respiratory problems.
  • Pharmacist - is available for any questions you may have regarding your medications.
  • Neuropsychology services - if needed, the clinical psychologist evaluates the cognitive, emotional and behavioral problems that may result from illness or injury. Behavioral management strategies and other psychological interventions with the patient and family are designed to maximize the treatment gains and ease transition back into the community.
  • Nutritional Counseling - to help patients and families develop proper diets and menus that will prevent future health problems.
  • Outpatient Therapy - the physician may order outpatient visits after a patient completes an inpatient stay. UVA-Healthsouth also offers outpatient therapy to anyone who has further rehabilitation needs. Our outpatient department is located on the ground floor of the hospital.
  • Home Assessments - To further promote independence, UVA-Healthsouth therapists can visit the patient's home (Charlottesville area) before discharge to make a physical assessment of the home. They would make basic recommendations about structural or safety adjustments needed to accommodate the patient's new needs. Arrangements for this service are made through your case manager and are done on an individual basis.
