The Generalist Scholars Program

The Generalist Scholars Program (GSP) is a scholarship program designed to develop leaders in primary care. Enrolled students will meet all the basic requirements of the School of Medicine but will have an opportunity to enhance their curriculum with activities specifically designed to allow them to develop the skills most utilized in primary care.

The program is scholarly in nature and attempts to provide students the opportunity to enrich their medical school education with:

  • a tailored curriculum (including specialized course work and clinical training opportunities)
  • a scholarly experience resulting in thesis production
  • a close mentoring relationship with a generalist faculty member

Goals of the Generalist Scholars Program

  • To increase the number of students graduating from the University of Virginia who pursue a career in primary care.
  • To allow students who are interested in primary care to develop that interest throughout their four years of medical school and to supplement their exposure to tertiary care with equal amounts of exposure to primary care.
  • To foster the development of primary care "experts" who have completed additional training in disease prevention/health promotion; substance abuse; family systems and family therapy; clinical epidemiology; and advanced physical diagnosis as part of their undergraduate medical education.

All students offered admission to the University of Virginia School of Medicine during the regular interview season are given the opportunity to apply for the program.
