BIMS 7100
RESEARCH ETHICS

Alternatives

Participation in the Research Ethics course (BIMS 7100) is strongly encouraged as the first choice for training. For those postdoctoral students or researchers who arrive at the University of Virginia at inopportune times with regard to the course, there are resources available through the Graduate Programs Office. These resources are more of a supplement than a replacement for the Research Ethics course but through the ingenuity of you and your mentor, it may be possible to design a course of action that will suffice until the next Research Ethics course commences.

Available Resources:

  1. Integrity in Scientific Research - five video vignettes produced by AAAS and supplied with a "Discussion and Resource Guide". These videos are approximately 10 minutes each and may be viewed in the Graduate Programs Conference (GPO) Room (they are not available for removal from GPO). Instructions for reserving the conference room, video projector and VCR may be found at: Graduate Programs Support Services webpage.
  2. Copies of the text: Robin L. Penslar, ed., "Research Ethics. Cases and Materials" (Bloomington, Indiana: University of Indiana Press, 1995) have been purchased and placed in the Health Sciences Library. Recommended readings for specific topics may be found on the Research Ethics course syllabus.
  3. GPO also has copies that may be viewed in the office:
  • Deni Elliot and Judy E. Stern, ed., "Research Ethics. A Reader" (Hanover, New Hampshire: University Press of New England, 1997)
  • Francis L. Macrina, "Scientific Integrity. An Introductory Text with Cases" ( Washington, DC: ASM Press, 2000)

The use of these materials to satisfy any required Research Ethics training is entirely at the discretion of the researcher and their mentor.
