An Olympus D320-L digital camera is available for loan from the Graduate Programs Office under the following guidelines:

  1. Reservations to use the camera must be made at least one day prior to its use.
  2. If the user is unfamiliar with the camera, an appropriate training period will be required, usually no more than 20 minutes.
  3. Provinding that no other reservations exist for the day, the camera can be picked up starting at 8:00 a.m. on the day for which it has been reserved and must be returned no later than 5:00 p.m. on that same day. Multi-day use during which the camera remains out of the GPO must be approved by the Director.
  4. The person who reserves the camera is responsible for any damage to the camera or loss of the camera while it is out of the GPO under their name, regardless of who possesses the camera or incurs such damage or loss during that time.

To reserve the camera, contact the GPO by phone or email (see below).

The D320-L supports 800 x 600 pixel resolution and can record 40 images in high quality mode, at least 120 images in low quality mode (640 x 480). The camera has a built-in flash with several settings. Images are stored on an 8 MB SmartDisk mounted in the camera. Images can be viewed on the LCD panel on the back of the camera after they are taken. Erasure is also possible using the LCD, enabling field editing of pictures. Software included allows minor modification such as rotation and lighting effects (filters, contrast, brightness). Images are transferred from the camera to the user's PC via an included serial port cable. Images can be saved in a variety of formats including TIFF, JPG and GIF.

Anyone wishing to use the digital camera is strongly encouraged to borrow it for a practice and training period prior to their actual photo shoot. This practice period should include familiarization with the camera and its included manual and installation of the software for the purpose of downloading images to their PC. To avoid software license violations, the software must be removed from the user's PC once the desired images have been acquired and the camera is no longer needed.

While the images recorded by the digital camera are excellent when used on the Web, we discourage users from seeking images of sufficient quality for use in printed publications.
