Dr. Barrett's research focuses on defining the mechanisms by which insulin acts upon skeletal muscle and upon the vasculature within skeletal muscle to regulate the body's metabolism of glucose, insulin, and tissue proteins. To address these issues, Dr. Barrett and his collaborators use a number of innovative biochemical, radio-chemical, and imaging methods. Use of these methods has allowed the laboratory to quantify the effects of insulin on the processes of protein synthesis and degradation in skeletal muscle, as well as to define the effect of insulin to enhance perfusion of the microvasculature within skeletal muscle. In ongoing studies the effects of humoral, nutritional, and other factors that either enhance insulin's actions or provoke resistance to insulin action are being systematically studied. |
