Informatics Core

The National Institutes of Health provides our GCRC with special funding for a computer support facility. This facility is located on the GCRC and is staffed by a full time systems manager.  The laboratory provides clinical investigators with the latest computer tools to facilitate the analysis and subsequent publication process needed after the research data are collected. This involves entering, storing, and retrieving the data, statistical analysis, manuscript preparation, and production of colorful charts and graphs for presentation and publication. These scientific publications and presentations communicate the many valuable insights gained through clinical research at the University of Virginia GCRC to the world-wide research community and practicing physicians.

A couple of definitions:
INFORMATICS: the application of information science and technology to the conduct of clinical research.
BIOINFORMATICS: the science of data collection and analysis using mathematics, computer science, and knowledge of the biology of the system under study to reach significant and relevant conclusions.
