A much anticipated event at the Symposium is the presentation of the
Michael J. Peach Outstanding Graduate Student Award. This prestigious stipend award recognizes the accomplishments of our most talented and creative senior students, and has become increasingly competitive each year. (See your BIMS program chair for nomination procedures). The criteria for the award is as follows:

  1. Scientific merit of the students doctoral research
  2. Scientific productivity (i.e., first author publications, patents, other parameters)
  3. Ability to obtain intramural and/or extramural funding (NSF Fellowships, Howard Hughes Fellowships, Presidents Fellowship, appointment to Training Grants, other)
  4. Academic Performance
  5. Leadership Qualities
  6. Overall scientific ability (assessment of this will largely be through personal knowledge of the candidates by review committee members and letters of recommendation from individuals who know the candidates well).

Additional awards the graduate students are eligible for can be found here.

The Spring Research Symposium is a terrific way to share your current
research with your colleagues and peers in the Biomedical Sciences. Registration for posters will begin in March of 2009.  You can look forward to having breakfast and lunch on us, and there is a wine and cheese reception following the keynote address. We hope to see you and your poster at this year's symposium!
