Who We AreNearly 10 years ago, the Graduate Biosciences Society (GBS) was founded to act as the organizing body and faculty liaison for graduate students in those departments and interdisciplinary programs affiliated with the UVA School of Medicine. Over the past few years we have expanded so that we currently include approximately 300 graduate students who are doing research in the areas of biochemistry, biology, biomedical engineering, biophysics, cell biology, chemistry, immunology, microbiology, molecular physiology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and physiology. The GBS promotes both scientific and social interaction through the many events we host throughout the year. These events include our summer day trip for tubing down the James River, the Fall Retreat, monthly GBS Student Seminar Series (GBS4) talks, our Spring Symposium, and a variety of social functions including Foxfield Races. In addition, we sponsor events like the Alternative Careers Symposium to provide information about the variety of opportunities in science we may choose from upon graduating, and an Intellectual Property/Patenting symposium to inform graduate students about how licensing and patenting works at UVA. Through all of these events we aim to promote interaction between the many science departments here at UVA, and to provide a positive scientific atmosphere for the professional and personal development of tomorrow's scientists. We hope you will join us in that goal. |
