HOW ELIGIBILITY IS CALCULATED

Need-Based Aid eligibility is determined by analysis of financial information the applicant and his/her family are required to provide.

DEMONSTRATING NEED: TWO METHODOLOGIES

Federal regulations mandate that all schools nationwide use a standardized method approved by Congress to determine an applicant's need for federal loans. This method is called federal methodology.

Federal Need-Analysis Methodology
Cost Of Attendance For Student - Student/Spouse Contribution - Other Expected Financial Aid
= Demonstrated Need

Need for our institutional funds and for school-administered Federal Title VII funds is determined by institutional methodology. (Please see institutional aid policies and packaging examples.)

Institutional Need-Analysis Methodology
Cost of Attendance For Student - Student/Spouse Contribution - Parent Contribution
- Maximum Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan - Other Expected Financial Aid
  = Demonstrated Need

Non-Need Based Loan Eligibililty  is not unlimited and loan amount is restricted to the difference between the school-approved cost-of-attendance and other financial aid received up to the program maximums. Combined aid from all sources cannot exceed the standard budget.

Non-Need Scholarships may require that the applicant submit both the FAFSA and UVA SOM application even though the scholarship offer is not contingent upon the applicant's demonstrated need.

Service-related scholarship amounts are set by the sponsoring program entity. Most are not need-based. Eligibility is determined by the program(s) on the basis of their specific criteria.
