Clerkship Student Responsibilities
Overview and Detailed List of Responsibilities

Overview

During each clerkship period, 13-15 students will be assigned to work in Family Medicine offices. Approximately 25% of students will be assigned to university or community practices near Charlottesville. The other 75% will be assigned to offices in other regions of Virginia.

In the Family Medicine office, the student will see patients on his/her own. The student will conduct an appropriate problem-focused history and physical exam and present this data, along with the assessment and plan, to the preceptor. The preceptor will then see the patient with the student and revise the assessment and plan as necessary. The student will be responsible for documenting the patient encounter in note form. At some sites, there may be opportunities to spend time at health care resources outside of the offices such as the Free Clinic or nursing homes.

Students will be considered part of the health care team and will join in all of the relevant office activities.

Two days of each month, all Family Medicine students will return to UVa for a series of hands-on teaching workshops.

Specific Student Responsibilities

Local ImageSkill / Knowledge Mastery and Demonstration
Students are expected to show mastery of the skills and knowledge defined in the Goals and Objectives of the Family Medicine Clerkship.
Local ImagePatient Log
Students will be required to keep a log of patients that must be seen during the four week rotation. The list of required cases can be found on the back of the Family Medicine Passport.  The purpose of this log is to help students track the types of patients they see and the nature of their clinical involvement and educational encounter.  A tally of each encounter can be kept on the paper passport, but will need to be entered on-line under Family Medicine Patient Logs.
Local ImageClinical Skills Passport
The Family Medicine Clinical Skills Passport identifies clinical skills that need to be successfully demonstrated by each student during the clerkship and observed and documented by a member of the faculty. Third year students will be given their passports at the beginning of the clerkship. It is the responsibility of each student to keep up with them and to ask the faculty to observe and sign off on specific skills during the course of the clerkship. The completed passports will be turned in at the end of the clerkship. While the passports are not graded, they must be completed for a student to satisfactorily complete the clerkship. Observing students performing these skills may give our faculty a better perspective on which to base their evaluations of students with whom they are working.
Local ImageMorning Report and Workshops
All students will be required to return to UVA at the end of the second week of the clerkship and on the last day of the clerkship (see Family Medicine Clerkship Schedule). Morning Report sessions will provide students with an opportunity to present and discuss patients seen during the preceptorship experience. The workshops provide students with additional opportunities to learn specific skills and concepts that may not be covered at the preceptor's office.
Local ImageCase Tool
Each student must complete one Family Medicine case tool.  One case is related to preventative health care. This exercise is required, but not graded.
Local ImagePreceptor Log
Each student needs fill out a preceptor log which is a record of what physician they worked with each day.(The Required Logs page has instructions and will allow you to view or print a .PDF copy of the Preceptor Log)
Local ImageEvaluations
Student feedback is very important to the clerkship program.
Each student is required to submit:
  1. Uniform evaluation of entire family medicine clerkship program
  2. Evaluation of their community-based education experience
  3. Housing Evaluation (if applicable)
These evaluations should be completed using the online course evaluations
