I chose to be a family doctor because I enjoy all aspects of medicine from orthopedics to pediatrics to geriatrics. But more importantly, there is something special about caring for patients and families. Seeing them through crises and illness develops a special bond between doctor and patient. For me, it is an honor and a privilege to serve my patients as their family physician.

After completing medical school at the University of Michigan and a family practice residency program in Grand Rapids, Michigan, I was involved in developing and running a community health center in an underserved area. I knew at the time that I wanted to teach but, first, I wanted the experience of a busy real-world practice. From there, I joined the faculty at the new Department of Family Medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Working with Dr. Jack Medalie, the Department's founding Chair, I developed an interest in clinically applied anthropology, cross-cultural medicine, and the culture of complex organizations providing health care. I also continued to care for patients, teach students and residents, and explore the many exciting aspects of family practice.

The Department of Family Medicine at the University of Virginia is a dynamic, exciting, and growing Department with a strong tradition of learning and collegiality. Charlottesville is a wonderful place to live. The long Spring and Fall seasons, an outstanding Department and vibrant university community, a wonderful grass roots music scene, and a wide range of outdoor activities make this an ideal place to learn and work and an exciting place to live.
