I joined the UVA faculty in November 2000 after 12 years in the US Army Medical Corps. I completed my MD at Eastern Virginia Medical School and performed my Family Practice residency training at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Fort Gordon, GA. While in the military I completed Fellowships in Sports Medicine and Faculty Development. I spent the last 5 years of my military career teaching Sports Medicine at the Army Family Practice Residency program in Fort Benning, Georgia.
I am one of the Assistant Residency Directors and have been charged with developing and teaching the sports medicine curriculum in the residency. I also work with Claudia Allen (our behavioralist) to teach the "Reflective Practitioner" curriculum to our residents. This curriculum explores and promotes physician wellness through reflection and practice inquiry.
I am an avid fitness fanatic and love wrestling, soccer, triathloning, and any activity that works up a sweat and burns calories. I've been married to my beautiful wife Terri for over 20 years and we have two awesome teenagers (Chris and Dawn). Charlottesville has been a wonderful town to live in and raise a family.
Being a physician has been a personal calling from my earliest days. The relationship between doctor and patient, and its unique ability to bring about change and "healing" continues to awe and inspire me. My passion and desire is to teach and train physicians to become true "healers" to their patients. Come and join our program at UVA and see what a Family Physician can be.
