UVa School of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award

Award:  $2,500 stipend, a gift and membership into the School of Medicine Academy of Distinguished Educators

Criteria:  Excellence in teaching students is the standard for awarding the University of Virginia School of Medicine Award for Excellence in Teaching.  Characteristics which may exemplify such excellence include being an outstanding lecturer, small group discussion leader, dissection group tutor, outpatient clinic instructor, ward round teacher, student advisor, curriculum innovator, course director, clinical correlator, student advocate, director of student research, or excellence in other leadership roles.

Who is eligible?  Nominees must be faculty members of the University of Virginia School of Medicine with a rank of Assistant Professor and above who have not received the Robley Dunglison Award, the Robert Bennett Bean Award, or the University of Virginia School of Medicine Award for Excellence in Teaching within the past three years is eligible.  Please refer to the list of faculty who are not eligible to receive the award this year.

Who may nominate?  Any faculty member or student may nominate one full-time faculty member per year according to the criteria listed above.  All faculty and students will receive a copy of the call for nominations.

Selection:  The Selection Committee will review all nominations and select up to five awardees.  It will be composed of the following:

  • The School of Medicine ’s Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Development
    Dr. Sharon Hostler, will be the non-voting Chair of the Selection Committee;
  • The Vice President of the Mulholland Society;
  • President of the 4th year class;
  • One student selected by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs;
  • The most recent Dunglison awardee;
  • The most recent Bean awardee;
  • A Co-Chair of the Academy of Distinguished Educators;
  • One Academy of Distinguished Educators member named by the Senior
    Associate Dean for Faculty Development. 

The nomination packet should include the following: 

  • The University of Virginia School of Medicine Award for Excellence in Teaching Form.
  • Primary letter of nomination consisting of a 250 word statement by the Primary nominator, describing the teaching activities of the nominee, with with supporting evidence of the nominee’s educational excellence and worthiness for the award.
  • Seconding letter from a student if the primary nominator is a faculty member or from  a faculty member if the primary nominator is a student.  The format should be similar to the primary letter.
  • Up to two pages of supporting material, i.e., qualitative and quantitative evaluation of teaching activities from the nominee’s department or courses.

  • An updated curriculum vitae.

Presentation:  The award winners will be announced at the September meeting of the General Faculty.  The Dean will notify each award winner’s Department Chair and the Dean’s Office will be responsible for appropriate publicity in University and non-University publications.  The Mulholland Society will announce the award winners to the student body.
