The New Medicine:
The Ethics and Policy of Regenerative and Replacement Therapy

Educational Purpose

The Program for Ethics in Health Care Systems in the Center for Biomedical Ethics, in collaboration with the Islet Cell Transplant Center, and the Morphogenesis and Regenerative Medicine Institute, is pleased to announce a national conference. "The New Medicine: The Ethics and Policy of Regenerative and Replacement Therapies," will be held March 16-17, 2006, at the Boar's Head Inn.  The program will explore medical, financial, ethical, and policy implications of the new medicine (stem cell research and living donor transplantation). The conference is supported by the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Research.

The program will center on stem cell research and living donor transplant surgery. It will include such topics as: Reviewing Adult and ES Cell Science, Policy and the NRC/IOM Committee, The California Experience, Financing the New Medicine (Profits, Non-Profits, Government, and Industry), Regulation and Oversight, Patients' Perspectives, and the role of UNOS. In addition, the program will offer an overview of the science and ethics of stem cell research and living donor transplant surgery and explore the federal role.

Educational Objectives

The program is intended to provide participants with an understanding of the medical, ethical and policy issues involved in the conduct of stem cell research and living donor transplant surgery.

- To inform participants of the science of regenerative and replacement medicine, especially stem cell research and living tissue transplant surgery.
               
- To ascertain where we have been and where we could be going.

- To discuss the ethically controversial aspects of the science.
       
- To discuss the voluntary guidelines issued by the National Academies regarding stem cell research.
              
- To ascertain the response of the private and public sectors, including initiatives by various states.

Location/Accommodations

The conference will be held at the Boar's Head Inn, Charlottesville, Virginia. Blocks of rooms have been reserved at the Boar's Head Inn ($225/night) 800.476.1988 or 434.296.2181. Reservations must be made at the Boar's Head no later then Friday, January 13, 2006 in order to receive the above rate. After that date, all remaining rooms will be released from the block.

Fees

The fee for each participant is $350, which includes all materials, breakfasts and lunches. Early registration is encouraged as registration for this course is limited. You are encouraged to send a substitute if you are unable to attend. The registration fee, minus a $50 administrative fee, will be refunded if notice is received in writing by February 16, 2006.
