Fellowship in Medical Education
The fellowship curriculum includes formal didactics on teaching methodology, clinical investigation and faculty development, as well as various teaching opportunities involving EM residents, medical students, EMS providers and college undergraduates. This serves to provide the fellow with a broad experience in academic emergency medicine.
In collaboration with the Office of Faculty Development, the fellow will participate in the Faculty Leadership Program (FLP). Designed to support and provide faculty with skills for a successful academic career, lecture series on the following topics are offered:
- "Thriving in Academic Medicine"
- "Teaching the Teachers"
- "Faculty Wellness"
- "Getting Started in Research"
- "Introduction to Clinical Investigation"
- "Moore Multimedia Bootcamp"
Each successive program builds upon identified strengths, successes, and the encouraged feedback of lecture participants; with programs innovated annually, the above only represents a partial list of class offerings for the following year.
To enhance didactic teaching techniques, an Advanced PowerPoint Course is offered through the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library. In addition, the fellow will attend at least one of two Teaching Workshops offered by the UVA Teaching Resource Center in the Fall and Spring of each year.
Furthermore, each fellow will be directly involved in the development of Simulation scenarios and procedural training for residents and students, while also serving as instructors for established courses in the UVA School of Medicine.
Residency activities will include active participation in resident conference lectures, journal club and other CME activities offered at the University of Virginia.
Finally, the fellow is encouraged to augment this curriculum with activities tailored to any special areas of interest in the field. An educational project is required for the fellowship year, with the specific goal of presenting an abstract at the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine meeting the following Spring. return to top
