The University of Virginia and the Digestive Health Center of Excellence consider referring physicians our most important partners in providing comprehensive care to our patients with gastrointestinal disorders. The Guide below is designed to help you and your staff refer patients quickly and efficiently.
Clinic Appointments
- Call 434-924-2959 to schedule an appointment. Physician preferences will be accommodated. If you have no physician preference, your patient will be scheduled in the first available appointment. Our goal is to accommodate appointments within two weeks.
- Urgent Referral: Patients in need of an urgent appointment will be seen by a physician within 24 hours. Please indicate that your patient needs an urgent referral when you make the appointment.
- Provide the following information:
- Patient name, address, phone number, insurance company
- Copy of the pre-authorization of referral from the patient's insurance company
- Copies of the most current lab tests, radiology reports and pertinent clinical notes
- An appointment notice will be mailed to the patient prior to the appointment date.
- Results of the patient's visit will be mailed to the referring physician within one week.
Procedure Appointments
Our goal is to perform endoscopy procedures within 2 weeks of request.

An appointment notice with procedure instructions will be mailed to the patient prior to the appointment date.

Following the procedure, a report will be signed by the DHC physician and faxed to the referring physician.
Screening Colonoscopy at UVa Outpatient Surgery Center
We provide our services in an additional location - the UVa Outpatient Surgical Center is conveniently located with free, onsite parking - Directions.
Currently an expert DHCoE endoscopist is available to perform colonoscopies in the new location:

Motility Clinic Appointments

An appointment notice and instructional brochure will be mailed to the patient prior to the appointment date.

Following the appointment, a preliminary report will be faxed to the referring physician. A final report will be faxed once it has been completed.
Infusion Clinic Appointments
Primarily for IBD and Rheumatoid Arthritis

- Copy of the pre-authorization of referral from the patient's insurance company

Nutrition Support Team Medicine
GI nutrition specialists are available for consultation in the GI clinics by appointment. Disorders typically seen include celiac disease, IBD, Short Bowel syndrome, malabsorptive disorders, gastroparesis, lactose intolerance, pancreatic insufficiency, liver disease, hydration management of patients with ostomies, management of home enteral and parenteral nutrition support, dumping syndrome, and other digestive disorders.
We currently offer:
1) GI Nutrition: If your patient does not need a GI physician consultation, but would benefit from counseling with a GI nutritionist, please refer to the GI Nutrition clinic. Typical cases referred to this clinic include patients with known celiac disease requiring gluten free diet education, or patients with GI related issues who are already managed by another physician, but need nutrition intervention. To schedule an appointment, please call 434-982-1582 and specify "GI nutrition" consultation.
Inpatient Services
The DHCoE Inpatient staff is a multi-disciplinary team offering the best in both medical and surgical specialty care. We combine the broad expertise of our nurses and physicians with services such as pain management, social work, physical therapy and nutrition. The integration of our services means shorter hospitalization and the best available care for your patient.
Transferring & Admitting a Patient to UVA Hospital
- Contact a DHCoE physician. If you do not have a physician preference, call 434-924-0000 and ask to be connected to the GI Fellow on call.
- The DHCoE physician or GI Fellow will facilitate patient transfer through the Bed Coordination Center. When a bed is available, the referring physician will be notified. If a waiting list exists, the Bed Coordination Center will communicate daily with the referring physician to update transfer status.
- Provide the following information:
- Patient name, address, date of birth, home phone, work phone, insurance provider and policy number, name of physician requesting transfer, hospital name & phone number of unit from which patient is being transferred.
