The Digestive Health Center of Excellence offers a world-class team of medical, surgical, and pediatric liver disease specialists offering cutting-edge therapies in the treatment of advanced liver disease and liver transplantation. We strive to optimize the quality of life of our patients by providing comprehensive multidisciplinary care from the moment of referral. Our team provides a complete range of innovative diagnostic and treatment services:
- Fatty liver disease. Our physicians are leaders in identifying factors that may cause nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). By partnering with leading biotechnology companies, we are developing antioxidants and novel therapies that may correct the underlying metabolic defects of this disease.

- Living Donor Transplantation. UVA is one of few sites in the U.S. to offer this novel and life-saving form of liver transplation, and was recently selected by the NIH as one of 10 U.S. centers to conduct a national study focused on the factors influencing outcomes of living donor liver transplants for both donors and recipients. Carl Berg, M.D., Director of Hepatology, was selected to co-chair the national consortium. "Knowledge obtained during the study will permit even better education of donors and transplant recipients about options related to liver transplantation," says Dr. Berg. Our transplant team includes hepatologists, surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, nephrologists, pulmonologists and specialty nurse coordinators.
