Research Interests:

Dr. Northup's research interests include liver tranplantation, portal hypertension, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).  With training in epidemiology, statistics, and outcome modeling, he is interested in liver transplantation outcomes and organ allocation policy.  He is also currently studying the medical complications in long-term liver transplant survivors, including colon polyps and cancer and recurrent liver cirrhosis with hepatitis C.  Dr. Northup has recently started studies in non-alcoholic liver disease associated with obesity and its changes after gastric bypass surgery.  He is active in hepatocellular carcinoma, has developed (with Dr. Caldwell) a multidisciplinary clinic dedicated to the treatment of HCC and is working on studies evaluating new therapies for spontaneous bacterial peritonititis, hepatitis C, and upper GI bleeding.
