James C. Respess Lectureship in Gastroenterology & Hepatology

This lectureship honors James C. Respess, MD, whose faculty appointment spanned almost 40 years (1957-1995) in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia.  Although he passed away in April of 1996, Dr. Respess' memory is irreplaceably imprinted on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.  He was instrumental in developing the initial digestive program at UVA, together with Drs. David Stone and Ed Wilson, and served as the first Chief of Gastroenterology at UVA.  This lectureship has been made possible by the generosity of Respess' classmates and spearheaded by Drs. Claudette Dalton and Richard Lindsay.  Every year, a distinguished leader in the area of gastroenterology and hepatology is invited to address the UVA faculty and trainees, and to honor the memory of Dr. Respess.
