·        Another big thank you goes out to our nutrition interns Kim Packard, Dave Stebbins and Becky Dekeyser for their help in obtaining donations and decorating the room- it looked beautiful!

·        Kati, the baker and owner of the Hungarian Bakery, brought over two fabulous cakes for us to enjoy.  The Hungarian Bakery is located right here in Albemarle County!  See the website ( http://www.hungarianbakery.com/ )  or call 434.973.8863 for more details.

·        The results are in!  We tasted four different types of bread, without knowing which one was which, and cast our votes for our favorite.  And the winner is…. Ener-G foods tapioca bread!! With 9 votes it was clearly in the lead.  Next in line was brown rice bread (3 votes), followed by corn bread (1 vote) and last came white rice bread with no votes at all.  All of the breads were made and donated by Ener-G foods.

MEMBER  NEWS

·        Welcome to…
Nicole Waldron, RD – I will eventually become the lead dietitian at the Digestive Health Center Clinic.   Carol and I will be working together in the clinic and I will take over around March.  I look forward to meeting all of you in clinic and at the next Celiac Support Group meeting!

·        The Charlottesvilli are going out for brunch!!

On January 29th, our next scheduled meeting date, we will try something new.  Meet us at the Bluebird Café on West Main Street (there is parking available immediately to the right of the restaurant).  They are very excited about working with us and have created a gluten-free brunch menu for this event.  Additionally, they plan to create and keep on-hand a version of their standard menu that indicates gluten-free items!  The brunch will be $15 per person and includes a main entrée with side, non-alcoholic beverages, fruit cup, tax and tip.  RSVP will be required for this meeting.  If you would like to come, contact Linda Niven by January 21st (Phone: 434/924-2286, E-mail: ltn6m@virginia.edu)

CELIAC UPDATES

·        A recent letter to the editor in the New England Journal of Medicine described a brief study in which several brands of oats were tested for gluten content.  Gluten was detected in at least half of the samples from each brand, supporting the claim that gluten contamination of oats is a problem in the U.S.  Read the article in the November 4, 2004 journal (Volume 351, Number 19, pages 2021-2022) or at http://content.nejm.org/cgi/reprint/351/19/2021-a.pdf

Please note: this article is a letter to the editor, not a fully published, peer-reviewed research study and therefore cannot be fully critiqued.

·        Caution!  Have you seen the new “Pam® for Baking” Cooking Spray?  This product, which came out earlier this year, contains flour and is not gluten-free.  The can is clearly labeled, just be sure to the right can off the shelf before throwing it into your shopping cart.  You may want to double check with family members and friends who cook for you also. For more info: www.pam4you.com/pages/products/baking/index.jsp

·        The Whole Foods Market® Gluten-free Bakehouse products are now in Charlottesville!!  The Charlottesville location is currently receiving 27 items from the North Carolina baking facility, ranging in price from $2.99-$7.99.  See below for a full product list.  The store is located at 300 Shoppers World Ct, on Route 29 North and the items can be found on a rack across from the bakery.  Check them out!

  • Wegmans

This customer service oriented supermarket opened a Northern Virginia store in  February of this year and it is apparently quite fabulous!  It was brought to our attention by several of our members and comes highly recommended.  Inside Wegmans, a separate section called Nature’s Marketplace houses its specialty items including gluten-free products.  Their website, www.wegmans.com, is a wealth of information!!!  They have food storage and cooking tips, nutrient content information, recipes and so much more.  Even better, you can look up all the gluten-free products they carry and easily search for gluten-free recipes in their enormous recipe database- they are all labeled!  If you find yourself in the Dulles airport area, consider stopping by to check out the store at 45131 Columbia Place Sterling, VA 20166 (703)-421-2400.  A new Wegmans is expected to open up in Fairfax, VA soon…

RESOURCES

  • On sale!!!!   Copies of Shelley Case’s Gluten Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide, July 2003 edition, are available through UVa at the bargain price of $8.00.  A newer edition is out with some manufacturer updates, however the diet information is current.  This highly recommended book makes a great holiday gift for a new celiac or a family member who has been wondering what celiac disease is all about.
*Addendum: This edition (2003) no longer available as of  July 2006*
  • The current, winter issue of Sully’s Living Without® magazine has a great article on a complete gluten-free holiday meal.  It also has a feature article on a UVa medical student who has celiac disease.  If enough people are interested, you can get a group discount on a yearly subscription ($20 instead of $23).  Let us know if you are interested.
  • Have you heard of Marinelli’s Fine Foods and Catering?  Located in Richmond, they produce made from scratch Italian foods for small catered events and all of their items can be made gluten-free!!  At the moment they only deliver in Richmond.  They are working on adding mail order service, but currently they are unable to ship. Let us know if you are interested in a menu and we will forward it on to you.

RECIPES

·        Crock Pot Chicken Stew

2 16 oz cans plain, white, sweet corn, drained

1 or 2 16 oz cans black beans, drained (I would use 2)

1 8 oz jar gluten-free salsa of your choice

2 lb uncoooked chicken (I used boneless chicken breast)

Put altogether in a crock pot and turn it on and go to work! Come home at the end of the day to a wonderful, warm and tasty meal!   Easy recipe Carol Parrish tried and thought some of you might like.

·        Monster Cookies

5 cups nut flour

1 cup raisins

1 cup walnut pieces

1 cup flaked unsweetened coconut

½ cup melted butter or shortening

1 cup honey

2 eggs, beaten

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/8 teaspoon salt

Mix all ingredients together.  Drop onto greased cookie sheet, or parchment paper, and press flat.  Bake at 325 degrees until golden brown. Makes 4 dozen cookies
