The Role of Inpatient Nutritionist for Digestive Health:
- Evaluation and assessment of nutritional needs
- Development and implementation of nutrition plans and goals
- Weekly follow up to assess the effects of medical nutrition therapy
- Provide education to patients and family members to optimize their recovery and their nutritional and medical outcomes
- Community and outpatient referral.
Purpose and Goals of Medical Nutrition Therapy/ Intervention:
Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) involves the nutritionist in providing evidence- based and team-based services of assessment, guidance, support, education and facilitation needed for individuals to successfully manage diet- related risk factors and symptoms of disease and their treatments.
Common Digestive Health Conditions:
The nutritionist works closely with physicians and other nutritionists to provide nutrition therapy and education to patients with conditions including:

- Failure to thrive
- Gastroparesis
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease
- Lactose intolerance
- Liver disease
- Malabsorbtive disorders
- Ostomy and hydration management
- Pancreatitis
- Radiation enteritis
- Short bowel syndrome
- Severe Trauma
- Burns- 2nd or 3rd degree, 20% TBSA
- Special diet order
- Recent gastrointestinal surgery
