Fall 2007 DIETETIC INTERNSHIP CLASS

Anne Buzzelli
Anne graduated from Bastyr University in Seattle, WA with a Masters of Nutrition and completion of the DPD course requirements in June 2007.  She demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, maintaining a 3.93 GPA in her DPD coursework.  Anne completed her B.S. in Business Management with a concentration in International Business in 1996. She had her first career as a web developer and designer and a consultant in computer technology services, but chose to pursue her graduate degree in Nutrition and thus pursue her second career in nutrition and dietetics.   She has both ServSafe and Red Cross CPR Certifications, as well as memberships in the Greater Seattle Dietetics Association, the Student Association of Nutrition & Dietetics, the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation and the Slow Food Movement.  Anne has gained nutrition experience as a student clinician at Bastyr University's Center for Natural Health, where she offered nutrition counseling to clients with issues including obesity, inflammatory bowel disease and diabetes.  She is very interested in digestive health and, after gaining her first two years of experience in a clinical setting, she wishes to pursue an entrepreneurial career outsourcing nutritional counseling to patients to further build upon their gastroenterologist's care. 

Allison Gilley 
Allison graduated from Texas Christian's University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition in December of 2005.     Allison demonstrated outstanding scholastic achievement, as demonstrated by her high GPA and through making the Dean's List from 2002 - 2005.  Additionally, she has been active in numerous organizations such as the Student Nutrition and Dietetics Association, and served as philanthropy chair for her sorority.  Allison has also garnered numerous honors including Golden Key Honor Society, and National Society of Collegiate Scholars. In addition, Allison has Food Safety and CPR Certification.   Of special interest, both her mother and grandmother are clinical dietitians, and her mother is a graduate of UVA Hospital's first dietetic internship class!   She has extensive research experience and has conducted over 300 hours of teaching, analyzing and collecting data for Power of Choice, a USDA ten week activity-based curriculum, which earned Second Place in TCU's Science and Engineering Research Symposium.  Allison has diverse interests in global nutrition and education.  Her long-term goals include pursuing an advanced degree in nutrition and eventually becoming a nutrition educator at the college level. 

Tamsen Grigonis
Tamsen graduated with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Nutrition from James Madison University in May 2007.  She also has a B.A. in Biology from the University of Virginia, but decided to pursue her second degree and graduate education in Nutrition.  Tamsen has extensive work experience as an Aerobics and Fitness Association of America certified personal fitness trainer since January of 2004.  In addition, she has certification in both CPR and First Aid and from the National Strength and Conditioning Association.  Tamsen has served as a nutrition educator and personal trainer at UVA's Intramural Recreational and Fitness Dept. and has served as both lead and logistics coordinator at the Cavalier Day Camp with the UVA Intramural Recreational and Fitness Dept.   Tamsen has worked with diverse populations from middle school students to elderly individuals with chronic illnesses.  She has been a guest lecturer at a middle school, at JMU through community service learning and at UVA through the nutrition class within the Dept. of Biology.  She also served as a teaching assistant within the Introductory Nutrition class at UVA while a student there.  Tamsen lives here in Charlottesville and is very excited about continuing her education by completing the internship and then pursuing her career in fitness and wellness nutrition. 

 

 

 Diana Harbourt
Diana graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise in May 2007 with a minor in Psychology.  She has excelled academically during her undergraduate years and has been a member of the Fitness and Nutrition Club, the Student Dietetic Association and the Health Promotion Team.  She served as the Relay for Life captain for the Fitness and Nutrition Club during her senior year.  Diana was also active as the Intramural Sports Captain for soccer, flag football, bowling and swimming.  Her academic excellence is reflected in her making the Dean's List from the Fall 2004 through the present.  Diana is a member of the Alpha Chi Sigma Professional Chemistry Fraternity, the Phi Sigma Theta National Honor Society and the Virginia Tech chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.  Diana has excellent work experience as a research assistant in diabetes education at the VA Medical Center, where she collected initial and follow-up assessment data, assisted in diabetes classes and entered data into a computer database.  Diana has a strong interest in sports nutrition and was able to incorporate this in her work as an undergraduate researcher in the Human Nutrition department at Virginia Tech.   She participated in a study on the predictors of gastrointestinal distress during an Ironman triathlon.  After completing her internship program, Diana would like to attend graduate school, secure a position as a clinical dietitian and continue to stay active with new research.      

Angela Ishee
Angela is a May 2007 graduate of James Madison University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics.   She has done exceptionally well academically and has been named to the Dean's List as well as the President's List at JMU.  She is a member of the JMU Dietetic Association and was ServSafe certified in the Fall of 2006.  She is also a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.  Angela has worked in a variety of both paid and volunteer settings in clinical and foodservice dietetics.  She worked as nutrition manager at the University Recreation Center from August of 2006 to the present, where she conducted nutrition analyses for students and staff and created and presented nutrition education programs.  Additionally, Angela completed her dietetics practicum at Western State Hospital in early 2006, and later served as a nutrition assistant there.  She has also worked at Hotcakes as a shift manager and caterer, where she supervised a staff of 4-5 employees and trained new employees as well.  Angela also has several volunteer experiences including at the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and with Adopt-a-Grandparent.  At this point in time, Angela is not sure which area of nutrition she will concentrate in, but is very passionate about pediatric and maternal nutrition, and feels strongly that prevention is the best way to secure a healthy future.

Caroline Seastrom
Caroline graduated in May of 2007 from the University of Maine with a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics.  She was an active member the Alpha Phi International Women's Fraternity, and demonstrated her strong sense of leadership, serving as president, recruitment chair and historian.  In addition she served as president of the Order of Omega Greek Honor Society.  She was also involved in the Nutrition Club and the Project Mentoring Program.  Caroline has excelled academically, making the Dean's List several semesters and being the recipient of the Presidential Academic Achievement Pin and the University of Maine Presidential Scholarship.  Caroline has a variety of volunteer experiences, including serving as an assistant Girl Scout Troup leader, a facilitator and guide at the Women's Resource Center at the University of Maine and a volunteer at the Manna Ministries Soup Kitchen.  She was also a participant in the "Race for the Cure" for two years.  Caroline has had foodservice experience as a server at a variety of restaurants where she excelled in her customer service skills.   Caroline is excited about moving to Virginia, a new part of the country for her, and coming to the UVA-HS internship due to the variety of specialty rotations.   She is most looking forward to the KCRC and pediatrics rotations as she would like to pursue a specialization in childhood nutrition.   She is very interested in pediatric obesity and would like to start her own nutrition counseling practice in the future.

Rachel Smith
Rachel graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics in May of 2007.   Rachel performed extremely well academically and made the Dean's List numerous times from 2004 - 2006.  She was also active in the Virginia Tech Student Dietetic Association and in Campus Crusade for Christ. Rachel has diverse paid and volunteer work experiences.  She worked in a variety of settings at Riverside Regional Medical Center, serving as a nourishment aide and other foodservice settings and shadowing RDs in the main hospital and within the Diabetes Learning Center.  In addition, she worked at Virginia Tech's Nutritional Oasis, a nutritional supplement room for non-revenue VT athletes.  Rachel also served as a student nutrition counselor at Virginia Tech, working with a variety of clients looking for weight loss, management of hypoglycemia and optimizing their health for strength conditioning.  Rachel also had the opportunity to work as an under-graduate researcher taking preliminary and final anthropometric measurements of over 300 study participants.    Rachel is interested in pursuing her career in clinical dietetics, but eventually wants to attend graduate school and specialize in an area of interest for her.    

 

Sara Stover
Sara graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics in May of 2007.  She was extremely active at JMU, serving as secretary and vice-president of the JMU Dietetic Association.  She is fluent in Spanish, having received the Advanced Spanish Conversation certification, and studied Spanish abroad in Ecuador, Mexico, Argentina and Madrid, Spain.  She was also an active member of the Spanish Club and Chi Omega Fraternity.  Sara excelled academically at JMU making the Dean's List several semesters in 2004 - 2006 and was also the recipient of the Margaret Spitzer Dietetic Scholarship and the Terra McPike Foreign Language Scholarship.  She has a variety of work experiences including serving as a lifestyle consultant and manager at Healthy Inspirations, where she worked with clients, completing 24 hour recalls and nutrition assessments, worked with budgets, created meal plans, recipes and nutrition presentations.  She also completed her JMU Dietetics field experience at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.   Sara also has volunteer work experiences with Meals on Wheels, Health Families of Blue Ridge and at the Bridgewater Nursing Home.  Sara is interested in clinical dietetics and her long term goal includes working with college aged students and athletes.

Kara Taddiken
Kara graduated from Kansas State University in May of 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition.  She was a member of the KSU Student Dietetic Association and was elected as vice-president in 2006.  She was also a member of the KSU Equestrian Team for four years and was also elected to the student athlete advisory committee in her senior year.  Kara has performed well academically and made the Big XII Commissioner's Honor Roll from 2003 until the present and is also the recipient of athletics scholarships.  Additionally, she received ServSafe Certification in 2005.   Tara has diverse work experiences as a server, Webmenu organizer and a student assistant manager with KSU Dining Services.   She also volunteered with the Flint Hills Breadbasket.  Her professional goal is to become a R.D. and work in the clinical or community setting.  She is most interested in prenatal and pediatric nutrition and would like to become involved with research in those areas. Long term, she would like to become involved in ADA activities and legislature.

Brandy Tate
Brandy graduated from Radford University with a Bachelor's Degree in Foods and Nutrition in May 2007.  She has performed exceptionally well academically obtaining a GPA of 4.0 overall and making Dean's List from 2003 - 2007.  She is the recipient of the Outstanding Student Award for 2003 - 2004 and was an Honor's Academy Highlander Scholar from 2003 - 2007.  She has demonstrated her leadership by serving as student council treasurer and vice-president of the Wesley Foundation, a United Methodist Student Ministry.  She also served as a Peer Instructor to University 100, the freshman Orientation course and as a Community Liaison for a year.  Additionally, she was a member of the Radford University Dietetics Association and has been ServSafe certified for four years.  Brandy has a variety of work experiences in the food service business, working as a server, cashier and front line cook.  Brandy is excited about attending the internship as it promotes leadership, teamwork and continuous learning.  She wants to continue demonstrating her strong sense of community within the program.
