They will need to know more science than ever, but they must also be skilled in treating patients with respect and compassion. Key Giving Opportunities in Education
  • Support for Space to Teach the Art and Science of Medicine and Nursing. Both the UVa Schools of Medicine and Nursing are planning to build new education buildings to meet the needs of our students. These new facilities will consolidate programs housed around the Health System and offer students the latest technological tools designed to accommodate a variety of learning styles. The result will be medical and nursing graduates better prepared to face the challenges of 21st-century medicine.
  • Professorships.  Gifts of $2 million and above may be used to create a named, endowed professorship in a particular department within the School of Medicine or Nursing. The endowment provides a salary supplement that helps UVa attract and retain outstanding faculty. The endowment may also be named to recognize the generosity of the donor or to honor an individual identified by the donor.
  • Faculty Fund for Excellence.  Gifts of $1 million or more can be used to endow a Faculty Fund for Excellence in a particular department or program.  These funds can be used for partial salary or research support and allow faculty to pursure research at the forefront of their fields.
  • Fellowships and Scholarships - gifts of $250,000 and above may be used to create named, endowed fellowship and scholarship funds. These funds help us recruit and retain the brightest students year after year, regardless of their financial backgrounds. High caliber students promote a first-rate teaching school, where academics, research, and clinical care thrive.

  • First-year medical students pay tuition of $21,000 (in-state), $33,000 (out-of-state), with additional living expenses of approximately $15,300. Nursing students pay $4,584 (in-state/undergrad) and $20,554 (out-of-state).
  • While UVa ranks among the lowest 20th percentile in medical student debt, the average medical student still graduates approximately $70,000 in debt, with some debts ranging as high as $150,000.
  • UVa School of Medicine and Nursing faculty members have received national and international recognition, including the Howard Hughes, Flexner, Lasker, and MacArthur Genius awards. Many serve as officers of major professional organizations, helping to shape health care on the national level.
