Research is making great strides in the war against cancer. Still, the disease claims the lives of 550,000 Americans each year. Recent discoveries have led scientists to significant victories against some cancers and opened up vast new areas of research. Every gift for cancer research matters, and each dollar you pledge will be matched one-for-one through the generosity of several lead pledges. |
Your gift to the Patients & Friends Research Fund can:
- Put more scientists to work on finding better treatments for cancer
- Quickly move discoveries out of the laboratory and into the cancer clinic

What Kinds of Cancer Research Can I Support?
The Patients & Friends Research Fund supports promising cancer research at UVa. The fund supports research for all cancer types in three distinct areas:
- Basic science -- research on the cellular level aimed at discovering the fundamental causes of cancer. Discoveries may potentially apply to preventing, treating, or curing all forms of cancer.
- Diagnosis -- research focused on better methods to detect cancer in its earliest stages.
- Treatment/drug discovery -- research focused on new ways to effectively treat cancer.
Accelerating the Pace of Research
Finding innovative approaches to cancer treatment depends upon brilliant and committed cancer researchers. UVa Cancer Center scientists have built world-class laboratories in a number of areas. Taking their discoveries from the laboratory to the patient's bedside requires robust support of their efforts. Private support is absolutely essential to jumpstart promising new cancer research dollars from federal funding.

The Patients & Friends Research Fund at UVa
A group of cancer patients, with their friends and families, founded the Patients & Friends Research Fund in 2000 to support innovative cancer research at the UVa Cancer Center.
Overwhelming and generous response from the community provided more than $500,000, sponsoring promising research to discover new ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer. Three years later the group formed again and, bolstered by the compelling work of the Cancer Center's scientists and clinicians, the Patients & Friends Research Fund received more than $1 million pledged over three years.
Now, they begin again in order to advance and multiply these important research achievements. As always, Patients & Friends is entirely volunteer-driven, and every dollar raised goes directly to cancer research.
