Remaking the School of Nursing:
The Claude Moore Nursing Education Building Nursing education building

School of Nursing students must learn in an environment where instructional techniques provide a seamless entry to the workplace. McLeod Hall, the school's home since 1972, does not provide efficiently designed space for nursing instruction that utilizes the latest technological tools for classroom and clinic. Nor can it support the type of research activities that result in more effective educational experiences and improved patient care.

The Building
The design of the new building reflects the values of the nursing profession, including wellness promotion, community outreach, and self-care. In this spirit, the building will include an open stairwell spanning all four floors -- to promote fitness and interaction. Large windows will bring in natural light. A commons area and adjacent café will give students, faculty, and staff a place to meet and enjoy healthy nutrition throughout the day.

The new nursing education building will also be a technologically cutting-edge facility, containing wireless, state-of-the-art classrooms and computer kiosks throughout the buildings. Included in the renovation of McLeod Hall is an expanded home and exhibit space for the Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry and its valuable collections, more space for the Center for Nursing Research, improved conference facilities, and a state-of-the-art Clinical Simulation Learning Center. In the simulation center, students work on highly sophisticated computerized mannequins that can be programmed to realistically simulate a variety of illnesses. Students learn lifesaving techniques as well as the confidence to perform in high-pressure situations.

A New Future for Nursing Education
The integrated buildings for nursing education (one new, one renovated) will provide:

  • Lecture halls and classrooms of various sizes and flexible design, utilizing the latest in instructional technologies
  • Increased space for research teams in close proximity to classrooms and the hospital
  • Tiered classrooms equipped to facilitate faculty-student and student-student interactions, utilizing the latest in instructional technologies
  • Meeting rooms and common space to promote interaction among undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and staff
  • A Student Life Center where student organizations will have a home and where leadership development can be fostered
  • 32,000 gross square feet of new space and 54,000 gross square feet of renovated space.

Make a Difference
With $12 million of private support, we can fund the construction of a new nursing education building and renovate McLeod Hall, helping UVa answer a critical nursing shortage affecting us all.
