What is the University of Virginia Health Foundation?
- The University of Virginia Health Foundation is a private, non-profit, charitable supporting organization created to strengthen the missions of the UVa Health System, including the Schools of Medicine and Nursing, the Medical Center, and the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library.
- The Foundation receives gifts in support of any part of the UVa Health System and dispenses funds in accordance with donors’ intentions.
- The Foundation strives to offer optimum flexibility to department chairs and faculty. Endowments and other long-term funds are soundly invested with UVIMCO, which consistently generates a high performance return. In addition, the Foundation Board regularly reviews investing performance and can recommend moving funds if the performance return is not strong. Funds held by the Foundation receive prompt and regular stewardship.
- The UVa Health Foundation has contracted with the University of Virginia Foundation to process financial expenses and monthly reports.
What is the purpose of the UVa Health Foundation?
- To increase the level of private support necessary for the Health System to achieve excellence and growth in education, research, and patient care
- To recognize the critical and growing role of philanthropy within the Health System, which now receives more support from private giving than it receives from the state
- To support and strengthen the concept of the Health System as a collaborative organization with shared goals and aspirations
- To represent the philanthropic interests of donors
Who serves on the UVa Health Foundation and what responsibilities do they have?
- When fully staffed, the Foundation Board of Trustees will include between 12 and 23 volunteers committed to securing a successful future for the UVa Health System. These leaders from the private and public sectors bring a valuable perspective from outside the University community, helping to broaden the Health System’s vision.
- The trustees’ primary responsibility is to increase philanthropic support to the Health System. They will set leadership giving levels through their personal contributions and unselfish giving of their time. They will also seek commitments from peers who are inspired to follow their philanthropic example.
- Board trustees help to set Health System goals and work toward their achievement. They give the Health System a greater presence – locally, regionally, and nationally – and act as powerful ambassadors for Health System messages and needs.
- Foundation trustees advocate on behalf of the Health System within and outside the University and promote the Health System to alumni, community and business leaders, and key national opinion leaders. They take on a major role in the life of the institution by recommending policies and overseeing finance and auditing decisions.
