Time in Time out Mentor Groups

First-year medical students interview one simulated patient portraying two different and challenging cases.   Students are given the option to “time in” and “time out” during their interview in order to request the assistance of their peers and mentors in the group.  This exercise introduces doctor-patient communication skills in a non-threatening and constructive environment.

Introduction to managing a challenging patient

First year medical students observe a faculty member interviewing two simulated patients trained to present a challenging patient attitude.   Challenging topics include: the “talkative” patient, the “angry” patient, or the noncompliant patient.

Cultural Differences Mentor Groups

A person with a unique cultural perspective speaks with first year medical students about the cultural differences or biases they have experienced.

Standardized Patient Inteviews

First-year medical students interview several simulated patients while being videotaped.   The purpose of this exercise is to allow the medical student the opportunity to practice interviewing skills with a simulated patient.  Students receive immediate feedback from the patient regarding the “patient’s” perspective of the encounter.  Videotaped performances are reviewed individually and in small groups.

Motivating Behavioral Change Mentor Groups

First-year medical students interview one patient who portrays three different cases needing behavior change.   This exercise exposes students to patient’s differing perspectives and allows the students to practice motivational interviewing techniques.

Patient with chronic-illness

Patients suffering from a chronic illness or condition meet with a small group of students to discuss their experiences.   These patients share how their health condition has impacted them physically, psychologically, socially and practically.

Female cardiac examination mentor groups

Students receive instruction from a faculty member and simulated patient on proper techniques and strategies for performing a cardiac exam on a female patient. Students are provided with the opportunity to perform the exam on a female patient while receiving immediate feedback.

OSCE

First-year medical students complete four brief physical examination stations as a final performance assessment.  This objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) includes stations ranging from neurology, chest & lungs to ears, nose and throat among others.

H&P Mentor Groups

First-year medical students perform a history and a complete physical examination on a standardized patient while receiving immediate verbal feedback about their techniques from mentors.

H&P

First-year medical students perform a history and a complete physical examination on a patient instructor (fourth-year medical student) while receiving immediate verbal feedback about their techniques.   The students also receive detailed written feedback from the patient instructors following the encounter.
