PAST PROJECTS

Turkish-Greek Dialogue Project

Under the leadership of CSMHI faculty member Joseph Montville, CSMHI convened four meetings of a project on Turkish-Greek relations. In April 1999, six influential Turks came to Charlottesville for three days of intense discussion on Turkish identity and Turkish-Greek relations with CSMHI facilitators. In January 2000, a comparable group of Greeks were hosted in Charlottesville for similar discussions. In October 2000, CSMHI brought the two groups together for a joint meeting in Caux, Switzerland. We were able to help stimulate real engagement between the Turks and Greeks, even in this first joint meeting.

These meetings were funded through grants from the Winston Foundation, the U.S. Information Service in Ankara, the American Embassy in Athens, the Cambridge Foundation for Peace, and The Welden Foundation. The discussions at the meetings were perceived as extremely useful by the participants.
