Leaders and Decision-Making

In 1993 a group of psychiatrists formed a committee to study the psychodynamics of various aspects of international relationships - a vital but not fully explored area of individual and large-group behavior. The group met twice a year for five years, and engaged in a dialogue both among themselves and with many others in various disciplines, including historians, political scientists, and former diplomats. One aspect of international relationships that the group focused on was the psychodynamics of leaders and decision-making. This report summarizes the group's theoretical approaches and clinical and historical evidence on this subject.

In order to build some useful bridges between psychoanalysis, psychiatry, and psychology on one side and political science, diplomacy, and history on the other, the committee attempted, whenever possible, to introduce psychodynamic explanations in a language that can contribute to interdisciplinary communication. The members of the committee are:

  • Vamik D. Volkan, M.D. (chair)
  • Salman Akhtar, M.D.
  • Robert M. Dorn, M.D.
  • John S. Kafka, M.D.
  • Otto F. Kernberg, M.D.
  • Peter A. Olsson, M.D.
  • Rita R. Rogers, M.D.
  • Stephen B. Shanfield, M.D.
