PAST PROJECTS
Black and Caspian Sea Collaborative Research Program
During 2001-02, with a grant from the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), CSMHI conducted a project entitled Gender Issues and Family Violence: Public Awareness and Service to Victims. Building on CSMHI's existing collaborative relationships with Georgians and South Ossetians and Turks, the project researched gender issues, family violence, and child abuse. Such problems have long been considered culturally taboo in Georgia, South Ossetia, and Turkey but are beginning to become more overtly recognized, as evidenced for example by Georgian President Shevardnadze's order of February 25, 2000 for an Action Plan on Combating Violence Against Women. The participating organizations for this project were: the Foundation for the Development of Human Resources (Georgia), Saphari Shelter for Family without Violence (Georgia), Ege University Department of Psychiatry (Turkey), the Tskhinvali Center for Human Rights (South Ossetia), and CSMHI. This project's aims included 1) to create an informational/statistical database on gender issues, family violence, and child abuse; 2) to define victim psychological profiles; and 3) to raise public awareness through multidisciplinary task forces in each country and a network among them.
