in the
Rotunda Dome Room
at the University of Virginia

Leo Rangell, M.D. was the inaugural speaker for the Volkan Lecture series
that honors the career and work of CSMHI's founder, Vamik Volkan, M.D.
Dr. Rangell - Honorary President of the International Psychoanalytic Association
and author of over 450 publications including "The Mind of Watergate: An
Exploration of the Compromise of Integrity"
- spoke on the nature of group
psychology:

Affects: In an Individual and a Nation

If Freud had not produced his life-work on the psychology of the
individual, his contributions to group psychology would be significant in
themselves. Since Freud's beginnings a century ago, group
psychopathology has exploded in complexity and portent.  How much
of psychoanalytic theory can we extrapolate and apply to groups?  Do
countries react to anxiety with defense and pathological outcomes?
Does a people have a character?  Do nations feel sad, or happy, or
worried?  Can a state negotiate and be reasonable?  Dr. Rangell will
comment on affects at the tip and the base of the population pyramid.
