Admission

On-line applications, as well as requests for forms, are made through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences . Applicants who make it through the initial screening are invited to interview with the faculty of the Immunology Training Program on grounds in Charlottesville. The program pays the costs of travel, lodging and meals for these interviews. The interview visit gives prospective students an outstanding chance to meet and talk with faculty members, current students, post-docs and others, as well as to get a feel for the University, the City of Charlottesville and the surrounding environs. Things to keep in mind about the admissions process are:

  • The application deadline for fall admission is February 15.
  • In general, students are accepted for enrollment in the fall semester of each year.
However, students are encouraged to begin research rotations in the preceding summer. Stipend and insurance benefits can begin as early as July 1.
  • The following are general requirements for admission, although they may be modified upon consultation with the Graduate Advisor:
    1. A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in a discipline in the natural or physical sciences.
    2. A strong complement of science and math courses such as calculus, general and organic chemistry, and a basic biology sequence.
    3. Test Scores:
      • GRE scores (quantitative, qualitative, analytical).
      • One GRE subject score, typically biochemistry, biology or chemistry, although others may be considered.
      • Foreign students must provide scores from the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) taken within the last two years. A score of 600 or more is generally necessary for consideration.
    4. A $40, non-refundable application fee (In cases of proven financial hardship the program will cover this fee).
    5. Three letters of recommendation regarding undergraduate or postgraduate research experience.
