The Carter Immunology Center was founded through the generosity of Mr. Beirne B. Carter, a Virginia businessman of vision and generosity. His vision was that the center would serve as a catalyst for the development of new ways to diagnose and treat human diseases. Immunology is a branch of biomedical research that deals with both clinical medicine and basic medical science. It is a field where findings in the research laboratory can be rapidly applied to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases as diverse as cancer, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus, cancer, AIDS and other infections. Excellence in immunology research requires not only a research program of the highest caliber, but also dedication to the education and training of immunologists of the future. The mission of the Beirne B. Carter Center for Immunology Research is to develop and sustain a program of research and training in immunology of international stature.
