HirescellsThe Carter Immunology Center was founded through the generosity of Mr. Beirne B. Carter, a Virginia businessman of vision and generosity. His vision was that the center would serve as a catalyst for the development of new ways to diagnose and treat human diseases. Immunology is a branch of biomedical research that deals with both clinical medicine and basic medical science. It is a field where findings in the research laboratory can be rapidly applied to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases as diverse as cancer, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus, cancer, AIDS and other infections. Excellence in immunology research requires not only a research program of the highest caliber, but also dedication to the education and training of immunologists of the future. The mission of the Beirne B. Carter Center for Immunology Research is to develop and sustain a program of research and training in immunology of international stature.

 

Governance
The Center is governed by the Director and the Scientific Advisory Board working in collaboration with the Dean of the School of Medicine. The Center Office is on the fourth floor of the MR-4 building and offers a site of coordination for initiatives in immunology research and education within the Medical School. Research programs in Immunology are carried out under the auspices of program projects grants, investigator initiated grants and training grants.

Beirne Carter Financing
In order to achieve our goals, the Center utilizes funds derived from a variety of sources including an endowment established by Mr. Beirne B. Carter both for general support, recruitment of new faculty, and the Beirne B. Carter Professorship in Immunology currently held by the Director.  The Center recieves continuing support from the Beirne Carter foundation (http://www.bcarterfdn.org/).  These funds supplement and complement the grants and contracts from many funding institutions earned through the efforts of our investigative faculty.
