Superior Cardiac Care for Children
The University of Virginia Children's Hospital Heart Center is one of the premier cardiac care centers for children in the mid-Atlantic region. The pediatric cardiologists on staff provide decades of experience treating congenital and acquired heart disease, and are committed to seeing patients within 24 hours of a referral.
"Our goal is to provide cutting-edge technology and optimal patient care in a timely fashion," says Medical Director, Paul Matherne, MD.
The experience of the heart team also contributes to UVA's exemplary results for pediatric patients. UVA performs over 300 catherizations each year with 40 atrial septal defect closures, 65 pulmonary or aortic angioplasties, 25 stent implantations and 20 patent ductus arteriosus closures.
A key element of the pediatric cardiac program at UVA Children's Hospital is the availability of immediate care and rapid turnaround of requests to be seen. We see patients within 24 hours of referral - often on the same day - because there's at least one cardiologist available at all times.
As medical science advances, more young patients with congenital heart defects survive into adulthood. UVA Children's Hospital's close collaboration with the adult-care Heart and Vascular Center is helping make that move as easy as possible. "The patients and their families find comfort in a seamless transition of care that includes the familiar faces of the pediatric cardiologists," remarks G. Paul Matherne, M.D.
