Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return

Nancy McDaniel M.D.

In this heart defect the heart has four chambers and four valves.

One or two of the veins coming out of the lung connect with the right side of the heart rather than entering the left collecting chamber. This lets some of the red blood mix with the blue blood on the right side of the heart. This increases amount of blood on the right side of the heart and may cause the right side of the heart to work harder than normal.

In most cases the child grows and acts normally and does not require any medicine or surgery. If this defect has other defects with it (usually a hole between the upper collecting chambers) then it is usually fixed at the time of that repair.

This is a rare defect and usually causes no difficulties.
