Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the Parent Group?

The Parent Group was created for parents of children at the Malcolm W. Cole Child Care Center to have a voice within the center.  The Parent Group also supports the center's children and families in a variety of ways including coordinating parent educational workshops, purchasing special supplies, and sponsoring social events.

What does the Parent Group do?

The Parent Group organizes and funds special center activities, such as the Spring Picnic, Summer Carnival, Parent Workshop Series, Employee Recognition Week, and Holiday Dinner for the center staff.  Fundraisers such as the flower bulb sales, school photos, and tie dyed t-shirt event as well as donations from families support these activities.  Additionally, the funds raised by the Parent Group are used for holiday gifts for the children, staff, and classrooms.

What are future plans of the Parent Group?

In 2007, the Parent Group would like to initiate monthly staff appreciation activities (bagels and coffee, baked goods, etc) to thank those who care for our children.  One family is asked to coordinate this activity each month.

The Parent Group is also interested in providing additional Parent Workshops, another tie-dye extravaganza, and other activities for the children, families, and staff members.

When does the Parent Group meet?

The Parent Group meets monthly.  Meetings alternate between lunchtime at the hospital and at 4:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room at the Child Care Center.  Parents and the Director of the center attend the meeting to share information and ideas.

How can I become involved and support the Parent Group?

To obtain the meeting agenda and minutes, please provide the Director or Parent Group President (Michelle McCarthy, mm4tm@virginia.edu with your e-mail address.  All parents are welcome and are encouraged to participate!  Additionally, meeting agendas and minutes will be posted on the center website.

Many opportunities for involvement in your child's/children's center are available.  These include assisting with Parent Group activities such as the Picnic, Parent Group Workshops, tie-dye fundraiser, financial contributions, and providing input and ideas, as well as future fundraising projects.
