PARENT HANDBOOK

Administering Medications

Both over-the-counter and prescription medications can be administered to recovering, non-contagious children by the Center nurse or by a staff member trained in medication administration, with written authorization from the parent.  No consent is effective for longer than 10 working days except with written authorization from the child’s physician.  Any medications left at the Center more than 14 days after authorization expires will be discarded in compliance with Virginia State Licensing regulations.  All medications must be in the original container and labeled with the child’s name, the medication name, dosage, time for administering the medication, and other such information as required to assure the safety of the child receiving the medication.  Children for whom emergency medications have been prescribed shall be in the care of a child care provider trained in administration of medication.

A copy of staff health policies and procedures may be reviewed upon request.
