Building a Model:
The Trans-University Center for Global Health
Addressing Health Disparities
Diseases of poverty demand the attention and cooperation of the entire world community. Our common humanity requires that our resources be directed at preserving and enhancing life wherever it is endangered. Moreover, our common humanity is biological as well as ethical, and diseases of the poor can and do become diseases of the rich. Poverty increases the frequency and severity of disease. In a shrinking world, to seek health behind barricades is not only selfish, it is bad science. Building on existing strengths locally and internationally, the Center for Global Health is dedicated to alleviating the diseases of poverty.
Founding Principle
Health, a universal human value, transcending all cultural, geographic, and political barriers, provides a universal compass for our 21st Century.
Vision
Global health bridges all University schools and departments, provides the basis for synergistic, multidisciplinary, and international relationships, and is key to controlling overpopulation and unrest while maintaining human dignity, and thus a secure future for civilization. As one of UVa President John Casteen’s top new 2020 initiatives to “internationalize” the University, the Center for Global Health is uniquely designed to engage students and faculty across all disciplines as CGH scholars, fellows, and mentors in understanding and alleviating the diseases of poverty.
