Center for Global Health International Partnerships

Center for Global Health international exchanges at the University of Virginia provide a model of sustained international collaboration in global health and infectious disease research and training. Founded in 2001 by Dr. Richard L. Guerrant as one of the first pan-university Centers for Global Health, the University of Virginia's CGH builds on the Division of Geographic Medicine, originally established in 1978, and is one of the country's longest sustained international programs promoting international collaborative research.

Over 100 pre and postdoctoral faculty and fellows from Latin America, Africa, and Asia have trained at UVa with a remarkable 100% returning home to become independent and innovative researchers and leaders in their own countries. Their subsequent work includes the establishment of new trans-university Centers for Global Health in Brazil, the Philippines, Ghana, and South Africa

The Center for Global Health provides guidance and funding annually for 50 UVa students to conduct short and long-term multidisciplinary research and service-learning projects that address global health issues. CGH additionally promotes the engagement of UVa faculty and international mentors in the development of these projects, which draw students from the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Law, Commerce, Engineering, (Arcitecture?) and Arts & Sciences. Students travel to Latin America, Africa, and Asia, building new relationships and helping to strengthen and diversify UVa's long-standing research exchanges with international partners. This support of emerging leaders in the US and abroad contributes to developing a critical mass of scientists and health professionals working to improve the health of people globally.
